[SOLLEYSEL, Jacques de] A collection taken in whole or in part from *Le Parfait Maréchal*. Heks [2nd half of the 18th century] In-f°: 485-[59 bl.]-[12] pp., numerous blank folios, brown ink, a few erasures and slight crossings-out in graphite (2 ff. missing = pp. 67–70, slight ink bleed, faint water stains on margins). Parchment binding, gray linen cords, heavily marbled with red (soiled, two cords missing). A voluminous collection, compiled by a farrier who wrote at the end of the text: “Revised and corrected by me/ Laurent ÿanne/ Farrier in Hex” (p. 485). The manuscript, which is very legible, is divided into three parts (each followed by blank folios): “Universal Potion for All Kinds of [Horse] Diseases” (pp. 1–79), “Second Part on External Diseases of the Horse. New edition carefully revised and corrected and significantly expanded in this third edition” (139–218), “Chapter One. Hippopathology. On the Signs of Disease in Horses and Their Nature” (333–484). Several tables (12 unnumbered pages) conclude the work. The work as a whole constitutes a practical manual of equine medicine containing, in particular, recipes for numerous remedies. Several passages have been lightly crossed out with a pencil, more rarely with ink, probably by the same hand. Enriched with 3 loose documents (loose-leaf): 1 double-leaf and 1 folio of handwritten notes in another hand from the collection, - 1 printed business card of Th. Van der Straeten de Ponthoz (19th cent.). Probably from the family of Laurent Yanne or Janné in Heks, Hesbaye (Heers, Limburg). Ivo Gilissen’s Limburg genealogy website mentions a Yanne (Janné) family in Heks in the 18th century, including a Laurent (Heks 1750–1836), but he is described as a farmer, whereas his brother Jan Baptiste is listed as a blacksmith and veterinarian—likely due to a confusion in the sources or their transcription (ref. Ivo Gilissen - Genealogy from the Mergers of Tongeren-Borgloon, Kortessem, Wellen, Heers, and Alken. Online: www.daris.be/heers-fusie-prbs/heers-fusie-prbs-000120.htm#BM56594).
