[Ghent? c. 1620–1630] Folio: 209 ff., a few blank pages, brown ink, laid paper with foolscap watermark. Brown marbled sheepskin bound, signed L. Pernot-Verstraeten and dated July 4, 1860, with blind-ruled boards, a gilt-ornamented spine featuring raised bands, and a red title label (minor scratches on the squares and corners). Good untrimmed copy. A remarkable and extensive collection of historical and genealogical notes in French and Latin, carefully and legibly written throughout in the same hand, attributed (for comparison, see other manuscripts signed by him: lots nos. 1034, 1035, and 1059) to Ferdinand Anchemant (d. The first part, which includes a table of contents (f. 150), deals primarily with territorial claims: the rights of the Kings of Spain to Sicily, Naples, Anjou, Provence, Milan, Navarre, Portugal, Castile, Aragon, Catalonia, Roussillon, Burgundy, Flanders, Artois, Tournai, etc.; the rights of the Kings of England to France; the Salic Law; Gelderland, Hungary, Austrasia, Brabant, Antwerp, the Roman Empire, the Carolingian Empire, etc. The second part, entitled “De bello belgico,” deals primarily with the Dutch Revolt and the conflict between Catholics and the so-called “heretics.” Ref. Van de Woestijne, Paul, “Feudal Maldegem (12th century to 1795): The Feudal Courts and Fiefs,” in: Appeltjes van het Meetjesland, 64, 2013, pp. 209–308 (entry on p. 248). — Verstraete, Daniël, “Ferdinand Anchement en Brezende,” in: Vrij Maldegem, 27, 1976, footnote 2. Prov. Philippe Kervyn of Volkaersbeke (1815–1881), Belgian politician and historian (heraldic bookplate).
