CAPMARTIN de CHAUPY, Bertrand, *Discovery of Horace’s Country House*. A useful work for understanding this author, and one that provides an opportunity to discuss a considerable number of ancient sites [...]. Rome, “printed by Zempel (Vol. II: Komareck), published by Jean Ughetti” 1767–1769, 3 vols., in-8°: lxxx–[4]–366, xvi–477 (i.e., 479), xvi-574 (i.e., 534)-[1] pp.; 2 half-titles (page numbering errors: Vol. II, pp. 31 and 32 repeated; Vol. III, pp. 401–440 omitted; slight foxing on the title pages, a tear in the map restored). Light marbled and glazed calfskin of the publisher’s, double hatched gilt fillet encircling the covers, smooth gilt spines adorned with a pretty fleur-de-lis featuring the emblems of poetry, red and green title labels and volume numbers, gilt roll on the edges, on the endpapers, edges mottled with brown (slight rubbing on a few caps, very fine hairline cracks on the spines). A fine copy. First edition of this study. Complete with the allegorical frontispiece and the fold-out topographical map. The author (1720–1798), a French priest and polemicist excommunicated by the Parliament of Paris in 1756 and exiled to Rome, devoted himself to archaeology and discovered Horace’s house, which he describes here, along with the city of Rome and the Roman countryside. Ref. Brunet VI:29450. - Cioranescu 15449. - Conlon 67:685. Formerly owned by Théodore de Valenzi (ex-libris with coat of arms).
