987 - The Great Sacred Theater of the Duchy of Brabant [...]. The Hague: G. Block, 1734; 4 parts in 3 vols., in-f°: [6]–176, [2]–177/394–40, [2]–212–[2]–134–14 pp.; 278 ill. (some foxing or spots, some leaves and plates slightly browned, a small hole and marginal worm damage on the first leaves of the 2nd vol.). Speckled calfskin, spine with gilt floral raised bands featuring title and volume number labels, edges marbled red (rubbed, covers slightly flaked, one cap missing and another with a small loss, beginning of a tear at one corner of the first volume). Second edition of the French translation (original edition of the translation: Van Lom, 1729). This important ecclesiastical chorography of Brabant, of iconographic and genealogical interest, is divided into four parts devoted to the Archdiocese of Mechelen, Walloon Brabant, and the dioceses of Antwerp and 's-Hertogenbosch. The abundant illustrations, engraved by J. Harrewijn and R. Blokhuysen, among others, include nearly 280 plates and 5 in-text illustrations: 2 maps, 73 views of churches, convents, and abbeys—mostly bird’s-eye views spread across two pages, 177 plates of coats of arms, funerary monuments, epitaphs, stained-glass windows, and altars, and 26 medallion portraits. Complete with the index of names for the “inscriptions and epitaphs.” Although the work serves as the ecclesiastical counterpart to Jacques Le Roy’s *Grand théâtre profane du duché de Brabant*, it should not be attributed to him. Ref. BB V:330-331. Formerly in the collection of the Baron de Warenghien (heraldic bookplate). - Typographic bookplate removed.
