977 - NIEUHOF, Johan. The Mission of the Dutch East India Company to the Great Tartar Khan, the Present Emperor of China [...]. Illustrated with over 150 engravings, drawn from life in China. Amsterdam: Wolfgang, Waasberge, Boom, Van Someren & Goethals, 1693. 2 parts in 1 vol., folio: [8, including frontispiece]-208, 258-[9] pp.; 35 (of 37) pl. (the plate “Paolinxi” is missing, as is often the case, as well as the plate depicting the military formation; part of the title is missing without loss of text (restored), plate of Batavia restored with some loss, blackened edges of the plate of the Porcelain Tower reinforced and bound into the second part, leaf c3 (pp. 21–22) in the second part missing, water stains throughout but more pronounced in the second part, spotting). Modern imitation leather, spine with raised bands, old red edges, renewed endpapers. 3rd Dutch ed. of this great travel account by J. Nieuhof (1618–1672). Engraved illustrations: frontispiece (the Emperor, seated with a globe, looking down on a convicted criminal), 2 coats of arms of Spiegel and Witsen with a poem by J. Vos, large portrait of Nieuhof with a verse by J. Vos, a large fold-out map, 33 double-page plates (views of Chinese cities, including the Forbidden City) and 110 large plates in the text (villages, ceremonies, costumes, plants, animals, ...). The first part provides an account of the travels through the Chinese provinces and cities; the second part focuses on the country’s natural world and the customs and habits of the Chinese people. The mission marked the beginning of Dutch trade relations with China. Between 1655 and 1657, Nieuhof traveled across the country with the merchants de Goyer and de Keyzer. They received a rather reserved welcome there, and the commercial results were modest. But Nieuhof’s book was an immediate success, largely because of the impressive illustrations of this little-known part of the world, based on drawings by the author and compiled by his brother Hendrik. Ref. Tiele 800. - Landwehr (VOC) 539. - Cordier, Sinica, II-2344. - STCN.
