VAN KEULEN, Johannes New map extending from Pta Cataon to Pta Lamtaon, along the coasts of Cochinchina, Tonkin, Quangsi, and Quantung, also including the island of Aynam and that of Macao, with depths, harbors, and anchorages. Amsterdam: J. Van Keulen [18th c.], engr., 49.6 x 57.5 cm, hand-colored (left side slightly toned, a few tiny spots). First published in the 6th part of the "De Nieuwe Groote Ligtende Zee-Fakkel," containing the charts concerning navigation in East Asian waters, which for a long time required a certain degree of secrecy. In 1753, maps from the so-called “Secret Atlas of the V.O.C.” were finally published in print. This map depicts the coasts of the South China Sea from Guangzhou (Canton) and Macao down to Cochinchina (Vietnam), including numerous islands, in particular Hainan (referred to on the map as “Aynam”). Ref. Koeman IV Keu [402].
