Fragment of chocolate-coloured wood with incised hieroglyphs inlaid with white paste, preserving the lower part of a cartouche containing Amenhotep III's birth name, with the epithet Ruler of Thebes still legible, and two fragmentary columns of hieroglyphs to the right, belonging to a version of the shabti spell. Cf. Schneider, H.D., Shabtis. An Introduction to the History of Ancient Egyptian Funerary Statuettes with a Catalogue of the Collection of Shabtis in the National Museum of Antiquities at Leiden, Vol.3, Leiden, 1977, p.3, for a nearly complete wooden shabti for Amenhotep III in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MMA 15.2.10); Loffet, H.C., La Collection Emmacha: Antiquit s gyptiennes 1 Les shabtys et oushebtys, Paris, 2013, pp.22-23, no.3 for a wooden fragment; Bovot, J-L., Les serviteurs fun raires royaux et princiers de l Ancienne gypte, Paris, 2003, pp. 69-70, for fragmentary wooden examples in the Louvre. 8.41 grams, 42 mm (1 5/8 in.). [No Reserve] From the private collection of Peter Clayton, FCILIP, Dip, Arch, FSA, FRNS, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, UK; formed since the late 1950s. Amenhotep III was buried at Thebes in the Valley of the Kings (tomb KV22). His funerary equipment included shabtis in various hardstones and wood. The preserved text, .?nt s?m.t[n]. ('.forefront; and when you hear.'), belongs to a less common variant of the shabti spell found on other examples of Amenhotep III's shabtis.
