801 - "Lutheran or heretical propositions, which were publicly [!] preached by the Belgian [!] preacher Brother Peter Alexander, professor of sacred theology, and the judgment on them issued by the court." [Brussels 1545] Folio, bifolium, approx. 30.5 x 43 cm: [2] ff. (3 pp. text), paper, excellent contemporary secretarial copy with calligraphic initials highlighted in red and yellow (edges slightly frayed or torn). Petrus Alexander (Arras 1498/1500 – London 1563), Doctor of Theology (Sorbonne), renowned Carmelite preacher and confessor to Mary of Hungary, fled in 1544 to Alsace and in 1545 to Heidelberg, where he was appointed professor of theology in 1546. Later he served as a preacher in Switzerland (Lausanne) and in England (London). Although Queen Mary tolerated Lutheran ideas at her court in Brussels, Alexander was accused of heresy in 1544 by the Brabant church authorities and by the Leuven theologian Petrus Curtius (dean of St. Peter’s, later the first bishop of Bruges). The present document contains the final judgment of the Privy Council pronounced in St. Gudula’s Church in Brussels on January 2, 1545. Ref. Biogr. nat. I: 217–219. - H. Rott, “Emperor Charles V and the 1550 Performance of the Heidelberg Comedy ‘Eusebia’,” Neues Archiv für die Geschichte der Stadt Heidelberg, pp. 155–192. Included: a modern manuscript transcript and a (Dutch) summary. (2 items)
