DEGRELLE, Léon "Au Caucase à pied" [title on spines]. [Original manuscript]. (San Sebastian, Mola Military Hospital completed December 14, 1945) 136 ff. in-4° written recto and verso, paginated from 5 to 267, black ink - qqs. corr. in red - on lined paper, numerous erasures, strikethroughs and corrections in the same hand, aut. sign. "Degrelle" in fine (first 2 ff. missing). In transparent pockets and 2 beige plastic ring binders. Good condition. Heavily crossed-out autograph manuscript of the first of three books written by the exiled ex-leader of Rex on his hospital bed. During his flight to Franco's Spain on the eve of the German surrender, he crashed his plane on a beach near San Sebastian and was transferred to the Mola General Hospital, where he remained for several months under semi-supervision. This work and the two that followed, "Encerclés à Tcherkassy" and "L'agonie à la Baltique" (see next lot) were not published separately as originally planned, but compiled 4 years later in "La campagne de Russie" (Paris, éd. du Cheval ailé, 1949). Our manuscript is therefore a first draft of the Walloon Legion leader's wartime recollections. The first few pages, probably containing the title and table of chapters, are missing, but the text (which begins on p. 5 with chap. I) appears complete, with a few smudged pages and pagination anomalies. It ends with the author's signature and the date of completion. The documents proposed in this catalog are intended for collectors, history buffs, researchers, institutions, archives, private or public museums, and are in no way intended as an apology for any ideology or political party, past or present.
