WAUTERS, Émile. Letter to "Dear Madam" [Claire Bérardi, née Piérard]. [Brussels? 1874?] 1 p., two-leaf folio, tinted laid paper (slight creases from mailing). This letter to Claire Bérardi, wife of the French journalist Léon Bérardi—who was based in Brussels and served as editor of *L’Indépendance belge*—can be linked to a collection of letters concerning the portrait painted for her in 1879 (Arenberg Auctions sale, October 15, 2020, lot 828), currently held at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. This letter concerns an exhibition the artist is currently organizing. However, he cannot yet show it to her: “I’m rearranging and rearranging again to maximize the wall space. Fortunately, I’ve been appointed as the sole member of the placement jury; you’ll understand, then, that I’m giving myself the lion’s share. — Favoritism!!!” This may refer to the 1874 Ghent Triennial Exhibition, for which Wauters had been nominated as a member of the selection jury.
