781 - SAND, George L.A.S. to "Monsieur" [Léon Bérardi]. Nohant, April 7, 1870; 1 p., in-8°, vellum paper with a dry stamp “G.S.”, brown ink, signed “G. Sand” (small spot of gold ink, minimal stapling marks, slight creases from mailing). This letter follows four days after the one addressed to Flaubert on April 3, in which Sand describes the “cruel anguish” she endured while tending to her son Maurice, who was “seriously, dangerously ill” (see transcription at flaubert.univ-rouen.fr). Here she uses similar words: “I have been delayed in replying to you, through no fault of my own. My son was dangerously and cruelly ill when I received your kind letter. He is now safely out of danger, and I am returning to normal life. Please accept my heartfelt thanks for the sympathy you have expressed to me [...].” Léon Bérardi (1817–1897), a French journalist based in Brussels, was the editor of the major liberal daily *L’Indépendance belge*. Enclosed, [in the same envelope], same format: Sandeau, Jules—Letter from the author (L.A.S.) Niort (Deux-Sèvres), May 11 [...]. 1 p. (slight fold marks with minor tear at the bottom, no loss of text). "I am very concerned about Mr. Hetzel and his family. If he is in Brussels, would you please [...] ask him to send me news of himself?" (2 items)
