SAINT-SAËNS, Camille. Letter to "My Dear Friend" [Bérardi]. Las Palmas, February 20, 1899. 3 pp., two-leaf in-12, lined paper, signed "C. Saint-Saëns" (creases from mailing, minor marginal stains). “My friend Clairin [the painter Georges Clairin?] had already asked me to perform my Trio at your home [...]. I am so swamped that I am no longer my own master; it is truly unpleasant, but what can one do? [...]. I dream of retiring to spend the rest of my days in a hermitage where I could live in peace. Here I am quite at peace, and the weather is delightful [...]. The peak of Tenerife is entirely covered in snow [...]". Enclosed: Reyer, Ernest—Letter to "Dear Madam" [Claire Bérardi, née Piérard]. No place, Saturday, November 26, [18]81. 3½ pp., double-leaf in-12 (tear along the center fold, slight water stain on margin). A rather dense letter in which he weighs his comic opera *Maître Wolfram* (“this score from my youth”) against *Salammbô*, a far more ambitious work then in progress (“I am at the end of my fifth act”), which would not premiere until nine years later, in 1890, at La Monnaie in Brussels.
