MICHELET, Jules. 2 letters to [Léon Bérardi]. In-12, brown ink, signed "J. Michelet" (a few small brown spots, slight creases from mailing). 1. “To the Editor of L’Indépendance belge.” Florence, January 27, 1871. 3 pp. A remarkable letter written during his stay in Italy during the Franco-Prussian War, in which he presents his “little book,” “printed here,” *La France devant l’Europe*, which has just been published and which the bookseller-publisher Charles Lévy is about to send from Bordeaux to Bérardi for his review. “In it, I address Germany, everyone, just as much as France —I point out the storm on the horizon that threatens the entire West [...]”; “in it, I propose an armed league of all the working peoples of the West against the militaristic peoples—a league of the English, French, Germans, Belgians, etc. [...]". He concludes: "This very European point of view can be expressed without in any way compromising the delicate situation of the neutral nations," an allusion to Belgium’s strict neutrality during the war of 1870–71. 2. To “Monsieur.” Paris, October 26, 1864. 1 p. In gratitude for “the kindness with which you have always reviewed my works,” he “offers you an excerpt from my *Bible of Humanity*, which will be published on November 1.” Enclosed: a visiting-card-sized photographic portrait of Michelet. No place, no date. Albumen print mounted on original white cardboard, unmarked (small tear at one corner of the mount). (3 copies)
