MALOT, Hector. Letter addressed to "Dear Sir" [Léon Bérardi]. Fontenay-sous-Bois, April 27 [1872], 2 pp., double-leaf in-12, black ink on laid paper (slight crease marks, slight foxing, barely visible). A fine literary and political letter to the editor of “L’Indépendance belge.” Malot submits his novel “Souvenirs d’un blessé” for review: “I would like my novel to reach as many readers as possible (a desire I share with all authors); but under the present circumstances, this naive desire has a higher purpose: to make enemies of the Empire, and for that I am counting on your willingness to help me.” This approach naturally resonated with the Brussels daily, whose outspoken tone and opposition to the Second Empire—under Bérardi’s leadership—had made it one of the leading anti-Bonapartist newspapers. In a postscript, Malot announces the upcoming publication of two new novels, “Un curé de province” and “Un miracle,” which would also be published in 1872. Enclosed: 1. Ohnet, Georges—Letter to [L. Bérardi]. No place, no date. E.a. regarding a hunting party at Arthur de Rothschild’s. — 2. Lavedan, Henri—Signed autograph calling card to [Claire Bérardi, née Piérard]. No place, no date. Thanks for a work of art. (3 pieces)
