HUGO, Victor. Letter to [Claire] Bérardi [née Piérard]. Brussels [c. 1865–1866]. 1 p., in-8°, on tinted laid paper with the letterhead "L'Indépendance belge. Office of the Editor-in-Chief," signed "Victor Hugo" (slightly creased from mailing, right edge very slightly frayed). A charming invitation addressed to Claire Bérardi during the Hugo family’s stay in Brussels, when they were living at 3 (or 3bis) Rue de l’Astronomie in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode. Playfully punning on her address, Hugo reminds her of their appointment the following day: “Do not forget, Madame, that the Rue de l’Astronomie awaits you tomorrow at noon, noon—the street of the stars and the hour of the sun.” He continues: “We will be very happy to see you, and together we will regret the absence of your dear and charming husband,” before concluding with a phrase that echoes several other letters addressed to the Bérardis: “I place myself at your feet.” Ref. Victor Hugo, Brussels and Belgium [exh. cat.], Brussels, Crédit Communal, 1985, no. 154.
