755 - HUGO, Victor. Letter to [Claire] Bérardi [née Piérard]. Hauteville-House [Guernsey], January 25 [no year]. 2 pp., double-leaf in-8°, fine blue vellum paper, s. "Victor Hugo" (traces of creases from mailing, minor fraying at the bottom of a few folds). Good condition. A very beautiful letter, full of gallantry and friendship: "You possess, Madam, every grace—those of beauty and those of kindness. You have a way of thanking people that ensures one remains indebted to you. I sent you a storm, and you reply with a smile. My hurricane-like outburst has earned me a ray of sunshine.” He looks forward to welcoming the Bérardi couple to Guernsey: “When you arrive, Guernsey will be decked out in flowers. You and your husband—it will be a double celebration! What a charming hand to kiss, what a noble and warm hand to shake! Hauteville-House is already eager to throw open its doors wide.” He concludes with a warm message to the couple: “Please tell your husband that I love him, and if he is generous, he will pass on the same message to you,” before beautifully contrasting their destinies: “Be happy, madam, and blessed and proud in all that you love; a radiant life is yours by right, just as a stormy life is mine. I lay at your feet all my homage, all my devotion, and all my respect.” Ref. Victor Hugo, Brussels and Belgium [exh. cat.], Brussels, Crédit Communal, 1985, no. 152.
