HUGO, Victor. Letter to "Dear Mr. [Léon] Bérardi." Hauteville-House [Guernsey], May 7 [no year], 2 pp., double-leaf in-12, tinted laid paper with a small dry seal depicting a branch of flowers in a medallion, signed “Victor Hugo” (slight creases from mailing). In a clear protective sleeve, sealed along the edges. Fine condition. A lovely letter attesting to Hugo’s close relationship with the Bérardi family. He thanks Léon Bérardi for the toast made in his honor: “Here you have one of the voices of my family, and my wife and sons felt their own hearts expressed through yours.” He continues with a warm tribute to his correspondent: “In my solitude, I feel at one with the noble spirits of my time; you are one of the most sympathetic and generous,” before concluding: “I offer my respectful regards to Madame Bérardi and shake both your hands.” This closing phrase directly echoes the autographed inscription “to Madame Berardi / Victor Hugo” on the photographic portrait of Hugo and his son Charles given to Claire Bérardi (see no. 751). Ref. Victor Hugo, Brussels and Belgium [exh. cat.], Brussels, Crédit Communal, 1985, no. 151.
