751 - HUGO, Victor Visite-carte portrait of Victor Hugo and his son Charles, with a signed autograph inscription. Brussels, J. Maes [c. 1863] Albumen print, 8.8 x 5.5 cm, mounted on cardboard with studio marks (minimal abrasion in the upper right corner of the print; cardboard slightly browned). A remarkable double portrait, on the reverse of which the poet inscribed in his own hand: “At the feet of Madame Berardi / Victor Hugo.” This phrase directly echoes the one used by Hugo in his letters to the Bérardis: “I place myself at Madame Bérardi’s feet,” “I lay all my respects at your feet,” etc. (see nos. 752, 753, 755, and 756). This connection is all the more significant given that Charles Hugo, depicted here alongside his father, served as a witness at the wedding of Léon Bérardi and Claire Piérard in Brussels on December 27, 1860. Joseph Maes photographed Victor Hugo during his stays in Brussels in the early 1860s. After partnering with Michaux in 1862, he later ran the studio at 36 Rue Fossé-aux-Loups, Place de la Monnaie, on his own; this address appears on the back of this card. Ref. Directory of Belgian Photographers, s.v. “Joseph Maes” and “Maes & Michaux.”
