Important signed autograph manuscript of a bill to extend the term of the National Bank. Malou (1810–1886), a Catholic statesman, served as Minister of Finance on two occasions, from 1845 to 1846 and from 1871 to 1878, during which time he also served as Prime Minister. Our manuscript, which differs slightly in form from the published draft, was donated by its author to be included in the autograph collection of the Brussels politician and publisher A. Jamar (1821–1888), who was also Governor of the National Bank. As evidenced by the accompanying letter (Brussels, March 9, 1872): “I gladly yield to a collector’s whim that would flatter my vanity if I were capable of such a thing [...]”. Enclosed: 1. Ibid. – Autograph letter, Ixelles, October 16, 1854. Malou recommends to his “dear and former colleague” a student from the State Veterinary School for a position in the canton of St-Hubert. His protégé, Henri Michotte, “belongs to an honorable family from Namur, though one that is not particularly well-off.” - 2. [Jamar, Alexandre] - Handwritten biographical note on J. Malou.
