VANDENBERGHE, Paul *Le gars Quilleboeuf*. Paris: R. Julliard (1953). In-12 (evenly and slightly browned). Taupe Cape morocco signed Devauchelle, covers adorned with a radiating mosaic design in khaki, celadon green, and beige paper, with gold fillets and a blue o’euser; smooth spine with gold-lettered title; slate-blue laid paper endpapers; turquoise-blue Canson paper endpapers; gilt title; illustrated cover, preserved. In a bordered slipcase (leather scuffed). A very fine copy. First edition. No endpapers. Binding perfectly executed by Devauchelle, with an abstract design evoking “the bewildered gaze of Soldier Quilleboeuf,” according to a handwritten note pasted to a white endpaper. The cross across the pupils does indeed refer to the amusing cover illustration. Formerly owned by Raoul Simonson (gilded bookplate on gray leather).
