RIMBAUD, Arthur *A Season in Hell*. Brussels: Alliance Typographique (M.-J. Poot et compagnie), 1873. In-12: 53 pp. (slight foxing along the edges of the pages). Br., with printed publisher’s cover (slight foxing on the lower spine). A fine copy, fresh and partially uncut. A very rare first edition of the only text published by the poet. The cover, printed in black and red, serves as the title page. Fourteen pages were left blank for an unknown reason, perhaps due to censorship or a misprint. Published at the author’s expense in a small print run (between 250 and 300 copies). Printing of this slim collection was completed in October 1873. A few copies were distributed by Rimbaud himself, but, dissatisfied with the reception his work received, he subsequently destroyed part of the print run. As for the rest of the stock—for which he had not been paid—he left it at his Brussels publisher’s, where it was discovered by chance in the early 20th century by the Mont-de-Marsan bibliophile and patron Léon Losseau. Ref. Carteret II:271. - In French in the text 299.
