522 - DE BRUYN, Cornelis, Travels through Muscovy, Persia, and the Indies: Enriched with Three Hundred Illustrations [...]. Amsterdam: W.& D. Goeree, 1711. Folio: [8]-472-[12] pp.; 135 plates. (some staining mainly in the lower corners, offsetting on the plates, minor tears in the text and plates occasionally affecting the sequence numbers of the views or trimming the image, numerous paper reinforcements and old repairs, minor wormholes on a few plates in the last section, small burn hole on pl. 240, very occasional spotting or foxing, marginal waterstains on the last leaves). 19th-century half-sheep, marbled paper boards, gilt-ornamented spine with raised bands (rubbed, upper joint split, gilding slightly faded, inner joints reinforced). First edition of one of the most richly illustrated accounts of a voyage to Russia, Persia, and several other countries, by the Dutch artist Cornelis de Bruyn (1652–1726). He left The Hague in 1701 for Arkhangelsk and Moscow, where the Russian Tsar granted him permission to sketch the towns and villages of Russia. In 1703 he continued his journey through Asia Minor to Persia, where, after nearly a year in Isfahan, he spent three months at Persepolis, producing the first reliable drawings of its ruins, reliefs, and cuneiform inscriptions made available to Western scholars. He then traveled to India, Ceylon, and the East Indies before returning through Persia in 1706–1707, during which time he also visited Pasargadae. Illustrated with 135 engraved plates: allegorical frontispiece by Bernard Picart, author’s portrait by G. Valck after G. Knelle, 2 fold-out maps showing the route of the journey, 260 views on 131 plates (including 45 fold-outs), as well as 37 unnumbered illustrations in the text. The panoramic views of Moscow and Isfahan extend to a width of 195 cm. Ref. Tiele 209. - Klaversma & Hannema 310. - STCN. - Not in Atabey.
