473 - NOZEMAN, Cornelis [- HOUTTUYN, Martin] Dutch Birds; Described According to Their Habits, Nature, and Characteristics. All drawn entirely from life, new and accurate, engraved in copper, and naturally colored. Amsterdam: J. Chr. Sepp, 1770–1829, 5 vols., folio; 5 frontispieces, 250 plates (bound out of order but all plates present and text section apparently complete [text not cataloged], some small stains, mostly in the margins, stains in last vol., few spots). Contemporary half-marbled calf, marbled paper boards, gilt decoration, flat spines (some heads and tails slightly damaged or missing, corners bumped). A splendid five-volume Dutch natural history compendium by the Remonstrant vicar C. Nozeman (1720–1786) and Chr. Sepp. Published in installments from 1770 to 1829. This monumental work was the first comprehensive avifauna in illustrations and text of the Netherlands (which included Belgium from 1815 to 1830). The publication, which spanned 59 years, involved 3 authors and 3 generations of engravers. When Nozeman died, the work was continued by M. Houttuyn (1720–1789), a physician and biologist. The final volume was completed by J. Sepp with guidance from C.J. Temminck. Illustrated with 5 hand-colored allegorical frontispieces and 250 hand-colored engravings by Christiaan, Jan Christiaan (his son), and Jan Sepp (his grandson, 1778–1853) depicting the birds in their natural surroundings and, as far as possible, in their natural postures, and in some cases including their nests and eggs as well. The plates are unsigned, so it is not always clear who drew them. Ref. Anker 369. - Casey A. Wood, p. 496. - Nissen (VBI) 684. - Sitwell, p. 129. - Landwehr (Colored Plates) 145. - Balis (Merveilleux plumages), 33.
