460 - [CRONSTEDT, Axel Fredrik] An Essay on a New Mineralogy. Translated from the Swedish and German by Mr. Wiedman, et cetera, et cetera, by Mr. Dreux Jr., apothecary at the Hôtel-Dieu in Paris. Paris: P. Fr. Didot the Younger, 1771. In-12: [4]-xxxvi-389-[3] pp. (edges trimmed without loss and slight browning of margins on the title page, slight foxing on the dedication page, slight marginal tears without loss passim: see ff. L4, Q3, S2). Marbled calf from the edition, spine with gilt floral decoration and raised bands, red title label, edges marbled blue (scuffs, one corner very slightly creased). Rare first edition of the translation (orig. in Swedish: “Försök til mineralogie,” Stockholm, 1758) of the pioneering work by the Swedish chemist and mineralogist Cronstedt (1722–1765), who had first published it anonymously (this edition reveals his name in the Preface, p. xiii). Dreux’s translation is based on the first German edition (“Versuch einer neuen Mineralogie,” Copenhagen, 1760) by G. Widemann. The author is known for discovering nickel in 1751 and systematizing the use of the blowpipe for the analysis of minerals. Copy on bluish laid paper. Ref.
