[LEURECHON, Jean] Mathematical Recreations. Comprising several amusing and witty problems [...] and a collection of various charming and entertaining fireworks displays [...]. Lyon: J.-B. de Ville, 1680; 8vo: 216–100 (i.e., 96)–[14] pp. (foxing). Contemporary marbled calf, gilt-ornamented spine with raised bands (rubbed, endcaps missing, joints beginning to split, corners worn). Later edition (1st 1624) containing 62 more problems than the 1626 edition. Numerous woodcut illustrations. A highly popular work that went through more than ten editions by the mid-18th century, with numerous textual variants and occasional attributions to Mydorge or Henrion. Building on Bachet de Méziriac’s mathematical recreations, Leurechon incorporated problems in mechanics, music, astronomy, optics, and chemistry, along with an influential section on fireworks inspired by Hanzelet’s *Pyrotechnia*. Ref. DBS IV:1758. Formerly owned by Eugène Charles Catalan (1814–1894), French and Belgian mathematician, professor at the University of Liège (autograph note signed and dated June 1893; photogravure portrait).
