RÖSEL VON ROSENHOF, August Johann *De natuurlyke historie der insecten*; illustrated with life-size, hand-colored plates [...]. Haarlem: C.H. Bohn; Amsterdam, H. de Wit [c. 1764–1768] 4 parts in 8 vols., 4to: [50, incl. frontispiece]–280, [4]–281/568–[8], [16, incl. frontispiece]-251-[2], [4]-253/280-[8], [6 incl. frontispiece]-265-[1], [8]-266/573-[6], [12]-xxxi-220, xxvi–260 pp.; 358 (of 359) plates (plate 9 from the first class of butterflies missing (vol. 1), occasional spotting). Contemporary half-sheep, marbled paper boards, flat spines (most corners bumped, some normal wear on the spines). Rare first Dutch edition of the famous illustrated books on butterflies and other insects by the Nuremberg painter Rösel von Rosenhof (1705–1759), translated from the German *Der monatlich-herausgegebenen Insecten-Belustigung* (1st ed., Nuremberg, 1740–1761) and expanded by C.F.C. Kleemann (1735–1789), the author’s son-in-law, both in text and in plates. Entomologist, painter, and art dealer Kleemann, along with his wife Katharina Barbara Rösel von Rosenhof, personally colored all the plates for this edition. Our set contains 4 parts in 8 volumes. Illustrated with 3 engraved frontispieces by Martin Tyroff after Johann Justin Preisler (Part 1), by Aug. Joh. Rösel (Part 2), and by A.J. Rösel after Nicol. Gabler (Part 3), an author’s portrait, and 357 plates (on 290 leaves) of insects, all beautifully hand-colored. The author’s biography is by Kleemann; the index is by A.A. Van Moerbeek. Without the rare unfinished supplement (“Vervolg”). Ref. Nissen (ZBI) 3467 (3 frontispieces, 1 portrait, but only 356 plates on 286/288 leaves, including the “Vervolg”). - Landwehr, Dutch books with colored plates, 161 (3 frontispieces, 1 portrait, 384 plates on 314 leaves; unclear collation, with some gaps and/or errors, especially in the sections “Scarabeae terrestres” and “Papiliones nocturnes”). - STCN. Prov. Dusausoy, professor in Ghent, likely Clément Dusausoy (1842–1928) (old manuscript entry). - J. Ballion-Versavel, Ghent (stamp). - François Fremineur (modern bookplate).
