History Pub.] 1879 [-1880] 4 vols., 4to; 192 plates (text n.c., plate 1 of vol. 4 partly damaged, occasional spotting and offsetting on text pages). Green publisher’s cloth, flat spines (slightly soiled). First edition of both series. A comprehensive presentation of native plant species of the United States by Meehan (1826–1901). He produced this work for a broad audience of gardeners, rather than strictly for horticulturists or botanists, and thus also catered to Americans’ burgeoning interest in domestic horticulture. Illustrated with 192 chromolithographic plates printed by Prang & Co., showing the varied richness of the multitude of flowers. Ref. Nissen (BBI) 1331.
