Moretus) 1644 Folio: [36]-1492-[58] pp. (usual browning and spotting, light (water) stains on a few leaves, some samples present without damage to the leaves: e.g., between pp. 150–151, 260–261, 1116–1117). Contemporary brown sheepskin, gilt-ruled boards, gilt-ornamented spine with raised bands and black label, red edges (heavily used, rubbed with large scratches and losses of leather, damage to the headcap, tailcap missing, corners bumped). Interior in good condition. The last and most comprehensive of all Plantin Press editions of the great botanical encyclopedia by Dodoens (1517–1585). Illustrated with a fine engraved title page featuring medallion portraits of Dodoens and Clusius, as well as some 1,430 woodcut illustrations of herbs and medicinal plants, including mushrooms, cacao, tobacco, papyrus, etc. Includes chapters on American plants from the 1608 edition and on plants and drugs of the West and East Indies from the 1618 edition. Text set in two columns of Gothic type. Printer’s mark at the end. With a 19th- or 20th-century handwritten note on the flyleaf. Ref.
