Anthropomorphic Mask Ituri, Democratic Republic of the Congo Without base Wood. H 29 cm. Provenance: - Hans Hügi (1934–2016), Hombrechtikon. - Galerie Walu Auction 2, Nov. 30, 2002, Lot 147. - Swiss private collection, Zurich. The various ethnic groups of the Ituri region in the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo—including the Ndaaka, Lese, Bira, and Liko—developed a wide variety of mask types that, despite their different origins, share distinct stylistic similarities. Since the mask culture of this region has been insufficiently researched to date, it is often difficult to assign them to a specific ethnic group. According to Felix (1992), masks can be distinguished by their stylized human and animal facial features, though hybrid forms also occur. They were presumably worn during initiation ceremonies of men’s societies as well as at the funerals of high-ranking figures. Characteristic of these masks are their highly abstracted design language, the combination of human and animal features, and their frequently polychrome painting. Further Reading: Felix, Marc L.
