Miniature power figure "buti" Teke. Democratic Republic of the Congo With base Wood, fabric. H 10.5 cm. Provenance: - Lawson Mooney (1922–1998), Boston. Acquired in situ. - 1985: Galerie Walu, Zurich. - Claudine Eichele (1952–2020), Brotte-lès-Luxeuil. - Eichele Community of Heirs. In the traditional belief system of the Teke, the visible and invisible worlds are closely intertwined. Spiritual forces, particularly those of the ancestors, can influence people’s lives. Amulets serve as mediators between these two worlds. They are intended to harness spiritual forces for the benefit of their owners and to protect individuals, families, or entire communities from illness, misfortune, and harmful influences. The figures derive their power from ritual acts and the application of special, energy-bestowing substances of plant, animal, or mineral origin. These are often attached to the figure’s body or incorporated into a mass molded around the torso. The ritual activation is intended to establish a connection to the ancestors and other spiritual forces, whose protection and assistance the figure then conveys. Depending on their function and cultural context, such figures are kept in homes or at special places of worship and consulted as needed. Especially in times of crisis, illness, or impending disaster, they serve to provide protection, healing, or guidance. Further Reading: Lehuard, Raoul (1996). Les arts Bateke. Arnouville: Arts d’Afrique Noire. -------------------------------- Claudine Eichele (1952–2020) As the daughter of René and Denise David, the founders of Galerie Walu in Basel, Claudine Eichele was exposed to non-European art from an early age. From 1970 to 1990, she worked full-time at the gallery and undertook several trips to Africa in the 1980s. After the birth of her twins, she continued to work for Galerie Walu, intermittently and on a part-time basis. She spent her retirement in France with her husband, Christophe Eichele.
