Pair of twin figures, "ere ibeji" (soles "signed") Yoruba. Nigeria Without base Wood. H 23.5–24.5 cm. Provenance: - Dietmar Kienast, St. Gallen. Acquired in Nigeria in the 1960s. - Private Swiss collection, Basel. Whether blessed or cursed, twins appear in the myths, legends, and religious beliefs of many cultures as beings of special significance. Among the Yoruba in southwestern Nigeria—who have one of the highest twin birth rates in the world—the veneration of twins also plays a central role. Yoruba twins are believed to possess supernatural powers. They are regarded as bringers of good fortune, health, and prosperity, and at the same time as a protection against misfortune, illness, and death. Accordingly, they receive special attention and care throughout their lives. According to traditional Yoruba belief, twins share a single, inseparable soul. If one of the twins dies, this balance is disrupted, which can endanger the well-being of the survivor. To prevent this, a wooden figure called “ere ibeji” is crafted and ritually consecrated. It serves as a symbolic dwelling place for the soul of the deceased twin. According to traditional belief, the well-being of the surviving twin depends on the careful care and veneration of the “ere ibeji.” The figure is regularly washed, anointed with oil, and fed with food, such as porridge. In certain traditions, a corresponding figure might also be created for the surviving twin. If both twins have died, their figures can continue to be cared for and preserved within the family for generations. Thanks to distinctive stylistic features, “ere ibeji” figurines can not only be attributed to specific regions but, in some cases, to individual carvers whose unmistakable style and artistic personality remain recognizable in their works.
