Provenance: - Charles Ratton (1895–1986), Paris. - Marcel de Schryver (1926–1992), Galerie Témoin, Geneva. - Galerie Témoin, Charles-Edouard Duflon (1967–2021), Geneva. - 2016: Swiss private collection, Geneva. Certificate from Galerie Cabinet d'Expertise Témoin, Charles-Edouard Duflon, Geneva. Described as follows on the accompanying certificate by Charles-Edouard Duflon (Cabinet d'Expertise Témoin): "I, the undersigned, Charles-Edouard Duflon, certify that the ethnographic object pictured in this document is authentic and antique. It is a Gagon-Dan mask. Yacouba. Ivory Coast. Northern region. This mask has a large, beak-shaped nose. The almond-shaped eyes, surrounded by aluminum plates, represent a male spirit of the bush. This type of mask is primarily used during funerals to sing the praises of the deceased. It may also be worn during festivities. Early 20th century, or even earlier. This mask has a magnificent patina from use. The black color is derived from a plant decoction. A few nails remain at the base of the long nose, which were likely used to attach a monkey skin.
