Zoomorphic miniature mask, "lougo" Kpelle. Liberia / Guinea With base Wood, metal. H 10 cm. Provenance: - Galerie Noir d’Ivoire, Yasmina Chenoufi, Paris, 1984. - De Baecque, Paris, Dec. 10, 2024, Lot 184. - Swiss private collection. As with the neighboring Dan people, miniature masks are also known among the Kpelle (also called Guerzé or Nguerzé in French). These objects, known as “Lugo,” are scaled-down replicas of larger dance masks and were used to establish a spiritual connection to the respective “mother mask.” They are the personal property of initiated men and, unless carried on the body or in a pouch, are kept in a special place in the house. Terms such as “Passpartout,” “Passeport mask,” or “travel mask” stem from the fact that their owners could identify themselves as initiates—particularly while traveling—by presenting the mask they carried with them. The display of these insignia underscored their membership and rank, as well as their right to participate in gatherings and have a say in deliberations. In addition, these artistically crafted talismans served as energizing and protective amulets intended to safeguard their owners from danger and illness. Each lot is documented with multiple photographs intended to provide as comprehensive an impression as possible of its condition.
