Attributed to the Estergreen Carriage Company, Minnesota. Horse-drawn trap buggy with fringed canopy, late 19th to early 20th century. Featuring a compact, black-finished wood veneer body with a raised, tufted bench seat designed for pleasure riding. With four vibrant red wooden-spoke wheels and a striking red fringe-trimmed parasol with a cream canopy mounted overhead. Provenance: From a Private Afton, Minnesota Estate, 2004; Private Minnesota Collection. Lot Essay: John Estergreen founded the Estergreen Carriage Company, also known as the Estergreen Wagon Company, in Hastings, Minnesota. Born in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1826, Estergreen trained as a carriage maker and built the first carriage for future King Karl XV before immigrating to the United States. After a brief stay in Illinois, he settled in Hastings around 1857 and opened his first blacksmith and carriage shop at the corner of 4th and Ramsey Street. As the business grew, he built a stone building on the southwest corner of 5th and Vermillion Street between 1859 and 1860. At the time, his company was reportedly the largest wagon and carriage works in Dakota County, selling more than 400 wagons, carriages, cutters, and sleighs each year. When his son Francis joined the business, the company was renamed John Estergreen & Son. Estergreen died on April 12, 1894. Shipping Information: This item is located at an off-site location.
