Lot Essay: Michael Goldberg was an American abstract expressionist painter and teacher, born in the Bronx, New York, known for his gestural action paintings, abstractions, and still lifes. He began his artistic training at the Art Students League in New York and studied at Hans Hofmann's School of Fine Art, interrupting his studies to serve as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war he resumed studying with Hofmann and became part of the New York School, meeting Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and Milton Resnick. Teaching was central to Goldberg's career: he held visiting-artist positions at UC Berkeley and the University of Minnesota in the 1960s and later taught for decades at the School of Visual Arts in New York, where his wife, painter Lynn Umlauf, also taught. From 1980 on, the couple spent long summers in Italy, which influenced much of his later work. Goldberg's output resists easy classification, spanning dynamic gestural canvases, monochromatic and minimalist works, grids, calligraphic images, and collage. His first solo show was at Tibor de Nagy Gallery in New York in 1953, and he went on to have dozens of solo exhibitions over his career. His paintings are held in major public collections including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
