From the collection of Jean SOUVERBIE (1891–1981). Autumn, 1947. Oil on hardboard, trace of a signature and date in the lower right corner. Probably part of a series depicting the four seasons. H. 155 - W. 260 cm. Signs of wear, water stains, discoloration, a loss in the lower right corner, a chip, and mounting holes, likely from a frame. Reflecting direct inspiration from Jean Souverbie—particularly in the rendering of bodies and faces—at a time when the painter was at the height of his career, this significant work depicts an allegory of Autumn through the motif of the Three Graces, each of whom illustrates a stage of the season. Dated 1947, it thus exemplifies the postwar neoclassical shift among certain painters. The mounting holes at the top suggest it was intended for decorative purposes rather than as a work meant for an easel.
