PAUL-FRANÇOIS BERTHOUD (Paris, 1870–1939). “Female Bust.” Plaster with bronze patina. Signed. Measurements: 40 x 48 x 30 cm. It has some flaws. Paul François Berthoud was a magnificent exponent of the most Symbolist sculpture of the Art Nouveau period. He was a student of Pierre Dupuis, Emmanuel Fontaine, and Antonin Larroux. He was a member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, a founding member of the Salon d’Automne, and received an honorable mention at the 1898 Salon des Artistes Français. Paul-François Berthoud signed many of his works under the pseudonym Gilbert Lanquetin. In 2017, the Châteaudun Museum dedicated an exhibition to him. His most famous sculpture remains a bust of Sarah Bernhardt (patinated terracotta, 1900).
