JOHANN SHERPE (Vienna, 1855–1929). "Female Bust." Terracotta. Signed. Measurements: 60 x 45 x 28 cm. A female bust mounted on an integrated plinth, rendered in a naturalistic style with an earthy texture. The figure wears a mantilla or wide cloak with organic, highly expressive folds that wrap around the neck and fall over the shoulders. The woman’s expression is serene, introspective, and melancholic, with her gaze slightly downward—a common feature of fin-de-siècle Symbolism. Notable is the direct modeling in clay or terracotta, combining areas of loose, painterly strokes on the garments with a fine, polished finish on the skin’s features. It retains a warm patina in ochre and earthy tones that accentuates the volumes and chiaroscuro. Johann Scherpe was a prominent Austrian sculptor of the younger generation during the Ringstraße period in Vienna. The son of a carpenter and furniture designer (Karl Friedrich Scherpe), he began as an apprentice woodcarver and studied at J. Cesar’s modeling school. He worked with the sculptor Rudolf von Weyr and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna beginning in 1877 (in Karl Kundmann’s master class from 1880 to 1885). His early works focused on portraits and architectural sculptures; he later moved toward monuments with an increasingly austere form, characteristic of the transition to modernity. He was a member of the Genossenschaft der bildenden Künstler Wiens (1890) and won a gold medal at the International Art Exhibition in Berlin in 1896. He is buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery (Wiener Zentralfriedhof, Group 13 B).
