LOUIS DEJEAN (Paris, 1872–1953). "Woman at Her Toilet." Plaster. Signed Measurements: 27 x 27 x 13 cm. It shows signs of damage and restoration. Dejean (1872–1953) was a sculptor of immense institutional prestige in France, a leading figure in what was known as the "Bande à Schnegg," a group of sculptors who reacted against Rodin’s dramatism by seeking a return to calm and classical order. He was a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and a member of the Legion of Honor. His style is part of the “Return to Order” movement following World War I, seeking ideal beauty and harmony. His female nudes are considered the pinnacle of French elegance in the 1930s. They avoid overt eroticism to focus on the purity of line and volume.
