LEÓN GOBERT (Wasmes, 1869 – Mons, 1935). "Miner," c. 1904). Bronze. Signed, with foundry stamp. Measurements: 37 x 35 x 33 cm. The figure depicts a miner kneeling with his body bent forward, vividly capturing the fatigue or concentration of the harsh underground workplace. Like his contemporaries, such as Constantin Meunier, Gobert focused on dignifying the world of the Belgian working and industrial classes of the early 20th century, realistically portraying the struggles of coal miners. Léon Gobert was a prominent Belgian sculptor and medalist of the Realist and Regionalist periods, known primarily for his depictions of the working class and the customs of the Borinage coalfield (Hainaut), as well as for his public monuments. He specialized in the human figure and in the naturalistic depiction of miners (mineurs) and female laborers (hiercheuses) from his homeland, capturing the dignity and physical strength of labor with great expressiveness. He worked primarily in bronze, as well as in terracotta and ceramic modeling (notably his pieces produced in Saint-Ghislain), Soignies stone, and direct carving.
