JOE DESCOMPS CORMIER (France, 1869–1950). "Female Figure." Bronze. Signed. Measurements: 23 x 18 x 24 cm; 33 cm (total height including base). Joe Descomps was a French sculptor active in Paris in the early 20th century, specializing in small bronze and ivory figures, as well as chryselephantine works. He trained under the sculptor H. Hiolin and repeatedly exhibited at the Salon of the Society of French Artists, of which he was named a member in 1893. Dedicated to Art Nouveau between 1880 and 1910, his work eventually evolved toward Art Deco, a style in which he stood out as one of its leading figures. Today, Descomps’s work is held in museums around the world, such as the Mucha Museum in Prague, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Mingei International Museum in Hawaii, as well as in major private collections worldwide.
