Italian School, c. 1900. "Innocence Tormented by Love." Marble. Signed "Brancalonci". Measurements: 66 cm (height). One finger is missing. The work faithfully follows the trend of 19th-century neoclassical and academic sculpture, which reinterpreted the canons of beauty from Greco-Roman antiquity by applying an extremely smooth and stylized modeling technique to the marble. It depicts an idealized female nude in a distinctly dynamic and twisted pose (contrapposto), with her arms raised toward the back of her torso and her head elegantly tilted to one side. At the base, next to her legs, a small putto or cherub can be seen alongside foliage and flowers sculpted with great technical virtuosity—a motif frequently found in depictions of the myth of Venus or allegories of Spring and Nature.
