FRENCH PAINTER, MID-18TH CENTURY BURLESQUE SCENE WITH CHARACTERS FROM THE COMMEDIA DELL’ARTE Oil on canvas, 41 x 33 cm. Gilded wooden frame. A lively theatrical scene, reflecting the popularity of the Commedia dell’Arte in 18th-century French painting. The composition, enlivened by exaggerated gestures, fanciful costumes, and brilliant color contrasts, draws on the repertoire of the Comédie-Italienne, which developed in France from the innovations of Claude Gillot and later spread throughout the figurative art of the Watteau school. CONDITION REPORT Early 20th-century lining. Under Wood’s light, the painting shows no notable retouching, apart from minute dots scattered across the figures; the state of preservation is excellent.
