GENOESE PAINTER, 17TH CENTURY THE ABDUCTION OF THE SABINES Oil on canvas, 98 x 123 cm PROVENANCE Neapolitan family The scene, composed of groups arranged in diagonal lines, the architectural elements serving as a scenic frame, and the emphatic gestures of the figures are consistent with the painterly style of Valerio Castello and Giovanni Battista Merano. The episode narrated by Titus Livius and Plutarch was depicted several times by Valerio Castello; one of these paintings is housed in the Uffizi. The colors of the fabrics and armor, altered by the glints of light coming from a mist-veiled horizon, are also typical of Genoese Baroque painting. CONDITION REPORT Recent relining. Small, oxidized restoration spots scattered mainly across the upper part of the canvas.
