JAN JOZEF HOREMANS (Antwerp 1682–1752) LANDSCAPE WITH GENRE SCENE, HUNTER, STILL LIFE WITH FRUIT AND A HUNTING BAG Oil on canvas, 67 x 82 cm PROVENANCE Neapolitan family A leading figure in 18th-century genre painting. As can be seen from his works, the painters David Teniers and Adriaen Brower—though he did not know them personally—were the major 17th-century artists who inspired him. Following this thematic vein, Horemans focused on the bourgeoisie, immortalizing them in refined settings as they admire paintings, engage in courtly scenes, or enjoy musical gatherings. In some works, the poetry of light and the frozen moments even resonate with Vermeer-like echoes. In the painting in question, the painter’s versatility is evident in every genre and detail, in the portraiture of the figures and in the still-life subject matter, where each fruit is depicted with all its distinctive characteristics. CONDITION REPORT 20th-century re-stretching. Some oxidized restoration spots on the sides. The painting is in good condition. FRAME 19th-century gilded wooden frame with floral decorations
