LUCA GIORDANO, workshop (Naples 1634–1705) THE JUDGMENT OF PARIDES Oil on canvas, 126 x 176 cm PROVENANCE Neapolitan family The mythological subject recounted in the epic poem *Cypria* (7th century B.C.) was depicted in various versions by both Luca Giordano and his students. The versions created by the master in the 1680s suggest that the composition of the scene was inspired by the same subject painted by Pieter Paul Rubens between 1638 and 1639, now housed in Madrid at the Museo del Prado, The version housed in Vicenza, at the Civic Museums, is one example of Giordano’s reinterpretation of the Rubensian theme. (Reference bibliography: Luca Giordano 1634–1705, Exhibition catalog, Naples, 2001, p. 42) The painting in question, which we believe can be attributed to Luca Giordano’s circle, is one of several copies with minor variations, executed by one or more painters associated with the workshop CONDITION REPORT Extensive restoration, areas where the paint has been stripped FRAME Wooden frame lacquered in black and gold, from the late 19th century
