BY SOFONISBA ANGUISSOLA (18th century) (Cremona, approximately 1532 – Palermo, 1625) PORTRAIT OF A NOBLEWOMAN Oil on copper, 27.5 x 21 cm. Gilded wooden frame, 19th century. (Defects and missing parts) The painting is based on a portrait by Sofonisba Anguissola, echoing the composition of the figure and the sumptuous court gown, embellished with jewels, pearls, and embroidery. The subject, depicted according to the conventions of aristocratic portraiture from the 16th to the 17th centuries, is set within an interior characterized by rich red drapery. This version, executed on copper in the 18th century, attests to the popularity among collectors and the widespread circulation of the famous Cremonese painter’s models in subsequent centuries. CONDITION REPORT Minor retouching on the dress and the background. Traces of an old topcoat oxidized under Wood’s lamp.
