MADONNA AND CHILD, late 16th century. The work is attributed to an unknown sculptor associated with archaic and folk stylistic elements, active in the late 16th century. Mary’s body is fully finished at the head and the tip of her right arm, decorated with polychrome paint on the flesh tones and hair; the remaining parts are only roughly carved down to the base, as this type of sculpture was traditionally draped in fine fabrics. The blessing Child, attached at the level of the Madonna’s left arm, is carved in the round, with traces of polychrome on the skin and hair. The Virgin’s crown—which is likely not the original, as its diameter is smaller than the recess carved into Mary’s head—is an antique piece made of embossed silver, as is the small globe with a cross held in her right hand. CONDITION REPORT Missing parts, breaks, and replacements. Dimensions: 69 x 22 x 17 cm.
