ANONYMOUS 16TH-CENTURY PAINTER SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI IN CONTEMPLATION OF THE CRUCIFIX Oil on panel, 42 x 35.5 cm. First half of the 16th century The painting depicts Saint Francis of Assisi in contemplation of the Cross, shown in half-length profile, with his gaze intently fixed on the Cross. The close-up composition, devoid of narrative elements, focuses attention on the devotional nature of the image. The physiognomic rendering of the saint—with his sharply defined profile, tonsure, and short beard—is accompanied by a restrained painting style, characterized by the grayish-ash tones of his habit and the warm hues of his flesh tones. The delicate halo and the still archaic style preserve echoes of 15th-century models. CONDITION REPORT The painting has undergone a support transfer and is currently mounted on a recent particleboard panel. Restorative work has been performed on the saint’s face.
