FOLLOWER OF PIETRO VANNUCCI, KNOWN AS IL PERUGINO, 18TH CENTURY MADONNA IN GLORY WITH THE CHILD AND SAINTS, FROM THE SCARANI ALTARPIECE Oil on parquet-paneled wood, 34 × 23.5 cm Gilded wooden box frame, 18th century (with defects) The painting reproduces, with variations and simplifications, the famous composition of Pietro Vannucci (known as Perugino)’s Scarani Altarpiece, characterized by the division of the scene into two registers: in the upper register, the Virgin and Child, seated in glory within a luminous mandorla and surrounded by angels; in the lower section, a group of saints set against a vast landscape. The work attests to the enduring popularity of the Umbrian master’s models and their continued use in devotional art even in a significantly later period. The composition retains the balanced and symmetrical layout of Perugino’s original, while displaying a more fluid and simplified painterly style, attributable to an 18th-century execution. CONDITION REPORT The painted surface shows widespread abrasions, wear, and loss of color, with restorations and alterations to the paint layer.
